Chapter 1

Introducing the GT 70 Series

The GT 70 Series of remote access routers includes several different routers:

The primary difference among these routers is in their software loads. The hardware differences are their memory size and whether they have an internal Network Termination (NT1) device.

Each of the routers in the GT 70 Series provides connectivity between an Ethernet and an ISDN network.

This chapter introduces you to your GT 70 Series router. It covers the following topics:

Managing and Monitoring Your Router

Hardware Capabilities

Your GT 70 Series router comes equipped with an RJ-45 connector for an Ethernet 10BaseT (Unshielded Twisted Pair) LAN connection and an RJ-45 ISDN connector to connect to the WAN.

The following table lists the memory size of the different routers in the GT 70 Series.

The routers in the GT 70 Series provide ISDN connectivity through two different models: the U model and the S/T model. The U model has a Network Termination (NT1) device built into the router. The S/T model does not have an NT1 device built into the router.

Outside North America, NT1 is provided as part of the telephone company equipment. Inside North America, customers must provide their own NT1 equipment.

U Model

The U model has a Network Termination (NT1) device built into the router. It provides the power and function for operating the ISDN line. When you use the U model, you cannot use any other ISDN device on the ISDN line. There is no port on the back of the U model for any other ISDN device. Figure 1-1 shows a configuration for connecting the U model to the Internet.

S/T Model

The S/T model does not have an NT1 device built into the router. You must provide an external NT1 device on the ISDN line.

CAUTION:
OpenROUTE Networks recommends that you purchase an NT1 device that has adequate power surge protection.

The S/T model can co-exist with other ISDN equipment using the same ISDN line. Figure 1-2 shows a configuration for connecting the S/T model to the Internet.

Software Capabilities

There is no need to load any software on your GT 70 Series router. The router comes with the software already installed.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or your network manager can supply you with all the information that you may need configure and enable your router for communication over LANs and WANs. For details on ISDN, refer to Ordering ISDN in Chapter 2.

Managing and Monitoring Your Router

You can manage your GT 70 Series router through a PC or terminal connected to your router or over a network using Telnet or SNMP. OpenROUTE software incorporates a real-time operating system that routes packets and provides configuration and statistical information to you.

Through the use of lights on the front and back of the router, you can monitor the operation of your GT 70 Series router. For a full description of the lights, refer to Monitoring the Status Lights in Chapter 5.
