Chapter 1
Introducing the GT 60 Series
The GT 60 Series are remote access routers that let PCs and workstations on your Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN) access the Internet or another Wide Area Network (WAN). They are internetworking routers that forward (or route) data along the most efficient network-to-network paths.
This chapter introduces you to your router and covers the following topics:

Hardware Capabilities
Your GT 60 Series router has an RJ-45 connector that lets you connect the router to an Ethernet using 10BaseT (twisted pair) cabling. There are also models of the GT 60 Series that have a BNC connector, which connects to an Ethernet using 10Base2 (Thinnet) cabling.
The GT 60 Series also has a WAN connector that lets you connect the router to a WAN in order to access the Internet or another remote network. You can connect your router to a WAN using either
The following figure shows how to use your router to connect your Ethernet LAN to the Internet or another WAN.
Software Capabilities
The primary protocol that the GT 60 Series supports is the Internet Protocol (IP), which gives you the capability of communicating over LANs and WANs, including the Internet.
To use IP, you need IP network addresses. If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) offers dynamic IP addressing, you can set up your router so that each time you dial into your ISP, the ISP assigns an IP address that is valid for that session.
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or network manager can supply you with IP network addresses and other information that you need, such as static routes or filters to be enabled. See GT 60 Series Configuration Worksheet on page 17 for a list of information you need to configure your GT 60 Series.
You configure the GT 60 Series by using either a command line interface, which has a question and answer script called Quick Config, or a Microsoft Windows-based Setup Utility. This utility guides you through the process of configuring your GT 60 Series, and it provides detailed online Help.
