Chapter 1

Introducing the GTS 100

The GTS 100 is a remote access router that provides both local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) connections. It combines an Ethernet LAN repeater (a hub) with a full-function router for integrated local and wide area networking.

This chapter introduces you to your GTS 100 router and covers the following topics:

Hardware Capabilities

Your GTS 100 has a built-in Ethernet repeater consisting of four RJ-45 LAN connectors. You can use the LAN connectors to form a small LAN by connecting individual PCs or workstations to the connectors. You can also use the LAN connectors to link Ethernet networks by connecting Ethernet hubs or repeaters to the connectors.

The following illustration shows how to use your GTS 100 to

The GTS 100 has two WAN connectors that provide high-speed synchronous or asynchronous access to the Internet or other remote networks. You can connect your GTS 100 to a WAN using

The following figure shows how to use your router to connect your Ethernet LAN to the Internet or another WAN.

Software Capabilities

The GTS 100 supports multiple OpenROUTE software packages from simple Internet Protocol (IP) routing and bridging to multiprotocol connectivity to a WAN or to an internetwork.

The primary protocol that the GTS 100 supports is IP, which gives you the capability of communicating over LANs and WANs, including the Internet.

To use IP, you need IP network addresses. If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) offers dynamic IP addressing, you can set up your router so that each time you dial into your ISP, the ISP assigns an IP address that is valid for that session.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or network manager can supply you with IP addresses and other information that you need, such as static routes or filters to be enabled. See GTS 100 Configuration Worksheet on page 17 for a list of information you need to configure your GTS 100.

You configure the GTS 100 by using either a command line interface, which includes a question and answer script called Quick Config, or a Microsoft Windows-based Setup Utility. This utility guides you through the process of configuring your GTS 100, and it provides detailed online Help.
