Introduction

The GTS 100 works at normal room temperature and humidity and can co-exist with the usual computing equipment and electronic devices found in offices, homes, and classrooms. For complete information about the router operating environment, see Appendix A, Hardware Specifications.

The following figure shows a GTS 100 back panel. The GTS 100 has four RJ-45 Ethernet connectors, two WAN connectors, and a console connector.

Connecting Your GTS 100 to an Ethernet

You can connect individual PCs or workstations to your GTS 100 and/or connect an Ethernet LAN to your GTS 100.

Note: The maximum length for 10BaseT cable is 100 meters (approximately 328 feet).

Connecting PCs to Your GTS 100s

You can create a LAN by connecting PCs (or workstations) directly to your GTS 100. Use Ethernet 10BaseT (UTP) cable to attach PCs to your GTS 100.

1. Connect one end of the 10BaseT cable to one of the RJ-45 connectors on the GTS 100.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the RJ-45 Ethernet connector on your PC.

Connecting Your GTS 100 to a LAN

Use Ethernet 10BaseT (UTP) crossover cable to attach your GTS 100 to separate Ethernet segments.

1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to one of the RJ-45 connectors on the GTS 100.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to a 10BaseT concentrator, hub, or router.

Connecting Your GTS 100 to a WAN

You connect your router to the Internet or another WAN by using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over either a dedicated (leased) or a dialup telephone line or by using a Frame Relay network. To connect the router to a

The type of WAN cable you use depends on the interface type that the equipment you connect to supports. To connect to a device that has a Data Communications Equipment (DCE) connector, use a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) cable. To connect to a device that has a DTE connector, use a DCE cable.

To be sure that you are using the proper cable, check the part number on the cable with the information in the following table.

To connect the router to a modem or DSU/CSU device, the modem or device must be full-duplex and provide clocking for both transmitting and receiving.

The following figures show three possible DTE/DCE connections.

Connecting a PC to Your GTS 100

To set up the router's Ethernet interface so that it runs on the LAN, you must initially configure your GTS 100 from a PC or terminal connected to the router console port. Once the GTS 100 is running on the LAN, you can make configuration changes by connecting to the GTS 100 over your network.

The following illustrations show how to connect either a local or a remote PC or terminal to your GTS 100. For specific information on how to connect your terminal or PC, see your terminal or PC documentation.

To connect a PC or terminal

Plugging in the Power Supply

There is a +5V connector on the back panel of your GTS 100 router. Follow these steps to connect the OpenROUTE Networks-supplied power supply.

1. Connect the DC jack end of the OpenROUTE Networks-supplied 5VDC power supply to the +5V connector on the back of your router.
2. Connect one end of your power cord into the AC receptacle on the power supply.
3. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet.
