Solving Problems


This chapter provides information on the more common problems you may encounter in using your GT900 Series router. It includes the following topics:

Hardware Problems

Check the following table for the more common symptoms of hardware problems you may encounter with your router or with routers in general. The table identifies the symptom, possible cause(s) of the symptom, and the solution(s) to the problem.
Symptom Possible Cause(s) Solution(s)
No LED or other activity.

Power cord or power supply not properly seated.


Bad power supply or connector.

Router is not plugged into a power source.



Circuit power interrupted.

Check all cords and the power supply for proper seating.

Replace any defective item.


Connect router's internal power supply to a power cord and plug power cord into grounded power source.

Check outlet and circuit fuses or breakers.

Cannot access the router via the local network.

Incorrect cable.




Crossover switch is in the wrong position for ETH 1.

Replace with RJ-45 cable to connect to PC or hub.

Check Link LED.

Switch to correct position.

Cannot communicate from your router to another device via the local network.

Wrong cable


Loose connection



Crossover switch is in the wrong position for ETH 1.

Replace with the appropriate LAN cable.

Secure all connections.

Check Link LED.

Switch to correct position.

Cannot access a remote network or the Internet.

Wrong WAN cable type.



WAN interface connection is loose.

ISP service is down.


Gateway between router and the ISP is down.

Telephone lines are down.

Replace with the appropriate WAN cable. See Selecting a WAN Cable on page 21.

Seat the WAN connection securely.

Try again later. Contact your ISP for status.

Try again later. Contact your ISP for status.

Check for active telephone service on line.

Software Problems

Check the following table for the more common symptoms of software problems that you may encounter with your router. The table identifies the symptom, possible cause(s) of the symptom, and the solution(s) to the problem.
Symptom Possible Cause(s) Solution(s)
Cannot find a destination.

Wrong IP address.

Configure the correct address.

Cannot read a configuration.

Configuration not loaded in the router.

Download the appropriate configuration file.

Cannot access the router.

User does not have appropriate permission.

Check user's account and assign the required permission.

Router is not receiving data.

Configuration settings are not compatible.

Verify that the settings are the same for both the source and destination routers.

Cannot access a remote network or the Internet.

Wrong IP address.


Incorrect network mask.

No default gateway configured or incorrect default gateway address.

Correct the IP address for the destination.

Correct the network mask.

Configure a default gateway or correct the default gateway address.
