Diagnostic Network
Test Statistics


This chapter describes the network test statistics each diagnostic program generates including the IP statistics. The FDDI diagnostic program generates IP statistics only. This chapter includes the following sections:

IP Statistics

Ethernet Diagnostic Program

This section describes the network test statistics for the Ethernet diagnostic programs. To display these statistics, select Show Network Test Statistics from the Network Test Group Menu.
Ethernet Statistic Meaning
Number of packets transmitted without errors The total number of transmissions that did not contain errors.
Number of packets transmitted with errors The total number of transmissions that contained errors.
Number of packets received without errors The total number of packets that did not contain errors.
Number of packets received with errors The total number of packets that contained errors.
Collision detected Two or more stations attempted to transmit simultaneously before the frame transmission preambles were read causing a collision to occur.
No EOP flag The end-of-padding flag (EOP) is not enabled.
DMA overrun Transmissions stopped because the network did not supply data.
Alignment error The controller received a packet with a frame length that was not a multiple of eight.
Length error The packets received were larger than the maximum size.
RU left active state (no free receive buffers) The receive unit (RU) received a frame because there were no free buffers.
Frame truncated Transmission stopped in the middle of a packet.
Frame too short The packets received were smaller than the minimum size.
No resources error The packets received were larger than the available buffer space.
CRC error The Ethernet interface card detected a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) in the frame.
No TX Excess Coll. Due to high traffic volume on the network and excessive collisions, transmissions did not occur.
No TX due to no CTS Transmission did not occur because a clear-to-send signal was not detected.
Late Collisions Two or more stations attempted to transmit simultaneously after the frame transmission preambles were read causing a collision to occur.
Heartbeat error The Ethernet interface card sent a packet but detected that the transceiver has no heartbeat.
No TX DMA Underrun Transmissions stopped because the network did not supply data.
No TX due to no CRS Transmissions stopped because a clear-to-receive signal was not detected.
Total collision on network The total number of collisions that occurred on the network.
Transmit Deferred Transmissions were deferred because the network was too busy.

Serial (Dual) Diagnostic Program

This section describes the network test statistics for the dual serial diagnostic program for the CNX 500 router. To display these statistics, select Show Network Test Statistics from the Network Test Group Menu.
Serial (Dual) Statistic Meaning
Total transmits attempted The total number of transmissions the serial interface card attempted to transmit.
Total transmits completed The total number of transmissions the serial interface card completed.
Total packets received The total number of packets received from the network.
Total serial line echo requests The total number of echo requests that were transmitted.
Total serial line echo acks The total number of echo replies that were received from the network.
Total serial line test packets The number of maintenance packets that were transmitted.
Total serial line unsupported protocols The serial line diagnostic program only supports IP and ICMP packets.
Total transmits The total number of transmissions by the serial interface card.
Tx abort requested The number of transmissions that were aborted as requested.
Tx FIFO underruns The serial interface card could not retrieve the packets from the local packet buffer fast enough to transmit them onto the network.
Rcv CRC/frame errors The packets received that contained CRC and frame errors.
Rcv Buffer Overruns Packets that were received from the network but there was no available local buffer memory space.
DDLC Bus/address faults The bus and address errors that occurred while the serial interface card was under DDLC control.
Total receives The total number of packets the serial interface card received from the network.
Tx abort (no CTS) Transmissions that were aborted because a clear-to-send signal was not detected.
Rcv FIFO overruns The serial interface card could not retrieve packets from the local packet buffer fast enough to receive them from the network.
Rcv packets dropped The number of packets that were dropped because host buffer space was not available.

Serial (Quad) Diagnostic Program

This section describes the network test statistics for the quad serial diagnostic program. To display these statistics, select Show Network Test Statistics from the Network Test Group Menu.
Serial (Quad) Statistic Meaning
Number of packets given to adapter for transmit The total number of packets the quad serial interface card attempted to transmit.
Number of packets transmitted by adapter The total number of packets the quad serial interface card transmitted.
Number of packets received by adapter The total number of packets the quad serial interface card received.
Number serial line echo requests The total number of echo requests that were transmitted.
Number serial line echo acks The total number of echo replies that were received from the network.
Number serial line test packets rcvd The total number of tests packets received from the network.
Number serial line test packets sent The total number of test packets transmitted onto the network.
Number serial line unsupported protocols The number of protocols the serial line diagnostic program does not support. This program only supports IP and ICMP packets.
Number of rcv EOM The number of frames received with the end of message bit set.
Number of rcv EOM not set The number of frames received with the end of message bit not set.
Number of rcv short errors Number of frames received with the short frame bit set.
Number of rcv abort errors Number of frames received with the abort frame bit set.
Number of rcv residual bit errors Number of frames received with the residual bit set.
Number of rcv overrun errors Number of frames received with the overrun bit set.
Number of rcv CRC errors Number of frames received with the CRC bit set.
Number of rcv overflows Number of times a receive overflow was detected.
Number of rcv DMA disable Number of times a receive DMA was found to be disabled.
Number of xmt underflows Number of times a transmit underflow was detected.
Number of xmt FIFO underruns Number of times a transmit FIFO underrun was detected.
Number of xmt DMA disable Number of times a transmit DMA was found to be disabled.

Token-Ring (Single) Diagnostic Program

This section describes the network test statistics for the single token-ring diagnostic program. To display these statistics, select Show Network Test Statistics from the Network Test Group Menu.
Token-Ring (Single) Statistic Meaning
Line error A frame is repeated or copied, the Error Detected Indicator (EDI) is zero for the incoming frame, and one of the following conditions exist:
Burst error The token-ring interface card detected the absence of transitions between the starting delimiter (SDEL) and the ending delimiter (EDEL) of a frame.
ARI/FCI error The upstream neighbor copied the frame but was unable to set the ARI/FCI (Address Recognized Indicator/Frame Copied Indicator) bits.
Lost frame error The token-ring interface card failed to receive the end of a transmitted frame while in transmit mode (stripping).
Receive congestion error The token-ring interface card recognized a frame addressed to its specific address but did not have the buffer space available to copy the frame due to a high volume of traffic on the network.
Frame copied error While in receive/repeat mode, the token-ring interface card recognized a frame addressed to its specific address but the address recognize indicator (ARI) bits do not equal zero.
Token error The active monitor detected one of the following errors:
DMA bus errors The number of errors that occurred due to an internal DMA bus problem.
DMA parity errors The number of errors that occurred due to an internal DMA parity problem.

Token-Ring (Dual) Diagnostic Program

This section describes the network test statistics for the dual token-ring diagnostic program. To display these statistics, select Show Network Test Statistics from the Network Test Group Menu.
Token-Ring (Dual) Statistic Meaning
Number of packets given to adapter for transmit The total number of transmissions the dual token-ring interface card attempted to transmit.
Number of packets transmitted by adapter The total number of packets the dual token-ring interface card transmitted.
Number of packets received by adapter The total number of packets the dual token-ring interface card received.
Number of broadcast packets received by adapter The total number of broadcast packets the dual token-ring interface card received.
Total RING STATUS INTERRUPTS The total number of interrupts the dual token-ring interface card received.
Total SIGNAL LOSS The number of times the dual token-ring interface card detected a loss of signal on the ring.
Total HARD ERROR The number of times the dual token-ring interface card currently transmits or receives beacon frames to or from the ring.
Total SOFT ERROR The number of times the dual token-ring interface card transmitted a report error MAC frame.
Total TRANSMIT BEACON The number of times the dual token-ring interface card transmitted beacon frames to the ring.
Total LOBE WIRE FAULT The number of times the dual token-ring interface card detected an open or short circuit in the cable between the dual token-ring interface card and the wire concentrator.
Total AUTO REMOVAL ERROR The number of times the dual token-ring interface card failed the lobe wrap test and has deinserted from the ring.
Total REMOVE RECEIVED The number of times the dual token-ring interface card received a remove ring station MAC frame request and has deinserted from the ring.
Total COUNTER OVERFLOW The number of times the error counters fro the dual token-ring interface card incremented from 254 to 255 resulting in a counter overflow.
Total SINGLE STATION The number of times the dual token-ring interface card sensed that it is the only station on the ring. When another station inserts into the ring, the SINGLE STATION bit is reset to zero.
Total RING RECOVERY The number of times the dual token-ring interface card observed claim token MAC frames on the ring.

IP Statistics

This section describes the IP statistics. To display these statistics, select Show Network Test Statistics from the Network Test Group Menu of the interface diagnostic program.
IP Statistic Meaning
Packets transmitted The total number of IP packets transmitted to the network.
Packets received The total number of IP packets received from the network.
ICMP echo requests The number of echo requests that reached the designated destination node.
ICMP echo replies The number of echo replies to the echo requests.
IP checksum error The calculated checksum did not match the checksum in the header.
ICMP checksum error The calculated checksum did not run in the header.
IP address errors The total number of IP packets that had address errors.
Unsupported IP packets The diagnostics only support IP and ICMP packets.
ICMP echo - broadcasts The number of ICMP echo requests sent to all of the hosts on the network.
Transmit buffer overflows The number of transmissions not completed because buffer space was not available.
IP header errors The number of IP packets that had header errors.
Unsupported ICMP packets The diagnostics only support echo request and echo reply packets.
