Audience

This documentation set is for network managers or administrators responsible for installing, configuring, and managing hardware platforms that are running OpenROUTE software. Anyone undertaking these tasks should have a background in data communications, knowledge of bridging and routing methods, and experience configuring protocols and/or data communications devices.

Nx Networks recognizes that network administrators have varying levels of experience managing internetworking devices. The examples in these documents provide illustrated, step-by-step instructions for managing your routers. More experienced administrators may choose to rely on the command listing to manage and monitor their routers.

Conventions

This section describes the conventions and symbols used in the OpenROUTE online documentation.

Typefaces

Bold

 is used for commands and user input. For example:

Use the help command to display help about the Command Line Interface.

Clear statistics? (Yes or No): yes

Courier font

 is used for screen displays. For example:

BOOT information

Italics

 is used for emphasis. For example:

Do not answer Yes.

Small Caps

 Used for keys that you press on your keyboard. For example:

Press Enter to go to the Config> prompt.

Symbols

The following table describes the symbols that appear next to commands.

This symbol means you use the command to . . .
[C] configure the router. You access configuration commands after you enter config at the * prompt.

[M] monitor the router. You access monitoring commands after you enter monitor at the * prompt.

[C] [M] both configure and monitor the router. Changes you make to the configuration at the monitoring prompt, however, are not saved when you restart the router.

The following section shows how commands are presented.

Description of command.

Syntax: command

 Description of parameter and option

Example: command name parameter

Prompt? option
Syntax: The command followed by each parameter you can configure using that command. When you enter a command, you can save time by typing only the underlined letters.

parameter

 Description of each parameter.

option

 (in italics) Information you must enter with the command and parameter.

Example: An example of how you enter that command and parameter.

Entering Commands Using the Command Line Interface

Commands are not case-sensitive.

Instead of being prompted for options, you can save time by typing the complete command on one line. For example, you can enter the set framesize as follows:

Prompt>set framesize
Framesize in bytes (1024/2048/4096) [1024]? 2048
OR

set framesize 2048

Command Completion

 If you enter the unique letters that distinguish a command and press space, the software completes the command.

Displaying Commands and Options

If you press SPACE at a prompt, the software lists all the commands available at that prompt.

If you press space twice after entering a command, the software lists all the options available for that command.

Accepting the Current Setting

When the software prompts you for information, the default or current setting appears in brackets [ ]. To accept the information in the brackets, press enter. In this example, the current setting is 1024.
